The film opens with events 30-odd years in the past. Three boys, Jimmy, Sean and Dave, are playing street hockey. They see some wet cement and decide to scratch their names in it.
A 'police officer' comes by, berates them for this activity, and hauls off a frightened Dave in his car. Turns out this man isn't a cop. He and a partner in the car keep Dave as their sex toy for four days before he escapes.
Fast forward a few decades. All three are now middle-aged men still living in Boston. Dave is a basket case from his childhood trauma, unable to hold decent work and married to Celeste (Marcia Gay Harden). Sean (Kevin Bacon) is a homicide detective whose wife is away and only speaks to him on the cell phone. Jimmy runs a liquor store and is on his second marriage, to Annabeth (Laura Linney). Their lives have all gone in separate directions now and they have little contact. But it all changes when Jimmy's 19-year-old daughter Katie (Emmy Rossum) turns up dead.

Sean winds up with the case and Dave has strange injuries. What follows could have been another episode of Law & Order, or maybe C.S.I.

Score: 9 out of 10 Video and Presentation is presented in 2.40:1 widescreen using the VC-1 codec on a dual-layered BD50 disc. The film itself consumes a whopping 34.7 gigs of disc space. With a drab, cloudy palette and a tinted hue, isn't exactly a film that will show off your TV's strengths, but Warner has provided a near-reference presentation for fans to enjoy. Fine details, textures and shadows are perfectly replicated, though black levels are a bit too dark in spots, often obscuring some elements.
The print is pristine, with very few flaws, and the encode is free of any compression flaws. Compared to the previous DVD, the Blu-ray is the clear winner. It's a sharper, cleaner, crisper presentation. Score: 9 out of 10 Languages and Audio Audio choices are English 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio, French and Spanish Dolby Digital 5.1 with Spanish and French subtitles and English captions for the hearing impaired. None of Clint Eastwood's directorial efforts are all that impacting when it comes to surround activity.
But that's not necessarily a bad thing. Mystic River is no different.
Dialogue is crystal clear and surrounds are used to create some atmosphere, particularly during the first act when helicopter flyovers and police sirens signal the neighborhood that trouble has arrived. Bass is used sparingly, too, only showing up to punctuate the score or a few dramatic punches. The mix is quite a bit sharper than the original Dolby Digital 5.1 track found on the DVD, but it's hardly a room-shaking, reference presentation, but it doesn't really need to be, either. Score: 7 out of 10 Extras and Packaging This single-disc BD comes packed in a blue elite case. Extras have been ported over from the original three-disc DVD. The only missing extra from the release is the CD soundtrack.
Commentary - Featurette: From Page to Screen (11 minutes, SD) - Featurette: Beneath the Surface (23 minutes, SD) - The Charlie Rose Show Interviews (111 minutes, SD) - Trailers First up, there's a commentary with Tim Robbins and Kevin Bacon, who sound like they just woke up. The two mumble their way through, often leaving long gaps of silence, and don't offer the greatest of insight. They did talk about what it was like shooting with, and how much of it was done in a single take, but that was it. Next, there's a featurette, 'Mystic River: Beneath The Surface.' It's a 23-minute EPK and pretty much standard fluff. All of the main actors offer up the usual mutually congratulatory sound bites and praise.
Also, Dennis Lehane (who wrote the book on which this movie is based) and screenwriter Brian Helgeland discuss adaptation process. 'Mystic River: From Page To Screen' pretty much picks up where the last one led off. Many of Eastwood's comments in this and the previous segment were used in commercials hyping the movie.
If you remember his 'not about special effects' and 'a fine group of actors' comments, they are right here. More focus is given to Helgeland and Lehane on this one. 'The Charlie Rose Show – Interviews' features three interviews from last year, and these are much, much better. Rose is such a great interviewer and he gets the most out of Eastwood (42 minutes), Robbins (50 minutes) and Bacon (19 minutes). Forget the EPK stuff; this is the meat, with thorough discussions of what it was like working on the movie. The film's theatrical trailer and teaser are also included. Score: 6 out of 10 The Bottom Line Mystic River is an absorbing character study and a tense crime drama led by a fine cast and artful direction from Clint Eastwood.
It's a film that demands to be seen, no matter the format, though this Blu-ray is certainly a fine upgrade from the standard-definition presentation.
